Small 8vo., pp. [8], 159, [1], with half-title and an errata slip at the end; a very good copy in the original dark green straight-grained blind stamped cloth, gilt lettering on spine slightly dulled, small restoration to foot. First edition of Meredith’s first book, which he brought out at his ‘own risk, losing £50 or £60 on the venture’. ‘Not surprisingly he acquired a strong distate for what he later regarded as juvenilia with direct relationship to his first marriage’ (Collie), and there is some suggestion that he tried to suppress copies.
