Description of shop:

Brockhaus / Antiquarium is one of the oldest and internationaly renowned German antiquarian bookshops for travel, the history of exploration and ethnology. It was founded in Leipzig in 1856, as a departement of the famous publishing house F. A. Brockhaus. We are now based in Kornwestheim, near Stuttgart, as a department of the Brockhaus / Commission GmbH, one of Germany’s largest book distributors. We offer a wide range of antiquarian books on all aspects of travel – from the early works by and on the famous explorers, to ethnological studies from the South Seas or scientific journals like Petermanns Mittheilungen. We publish 4 –5 catalogues per year and exhibit at international antiquarian book fairs in London, Stuttgart and elsewhere. We also occasionally publish reprints of rare and famous travel accounts, edited by well-known specialists.

New books and old – under one roof. Brockhaus / Antiquarium is one of the few antiquarian bookshops left today that is a department of a larger book-processing firm. We also have an exoprting department, Brockhaus / German Books, which supplies libraries and scolars wordwide with German books and periodicals. The whole firm is still owned by the Brockhaus family.

I myself am a professional antiquarian book dealer. I began my three years apprenticeship in Bonn in 1972. I gathered experience in London and in Hamburg for a while, and started working for Brockhaus / Antiquarium in 1982, first as assistant, and, since 1986, as manager of the department. I am a member of the Verband deutscher Antiquare (German antiquarian booksellers association), the International Leage of Antiquarian Booksellers (ILAB), and I am a fellow of the Royal Georgraphical Society. Please feel free to contact me with any wishes, questions or suggestions on all aspects of my chosen field!
