Interest in travel writing as a literary genre has led to several engaging books that examine narratives written by English and Continental authors in the 1920s and 1930s. This scholarly interest suggests an ancillary area of investigation, one at a far remove from literary studies, but intriguing nonetheless; that is, an exploration of likely agendas shaping the ephemeral pamphlets, brochures and booklets crafted by European government agencies or private service providers, those tasked with attracting the much-needed tourist dollar (or lira or deutsche mark) to European countries struggling with depressed post-war economies.
The primary agenda behind these ephemeral items was, of course, commercial, but within a context of self-promotion, issues of national identity inevitably come to the fore. With this idea in mind, we have prepared a short catalogue featuring promotional travel material produced in Germany and Italy between the World Wars, with particular attention given to material aimed at English-speaking travelers. Interest in the travel ephemera of Germany and Italy from these decades stems in no small measure from the idealized constructs foregrounded in their tourist publications, constructs masking the reality of totalitarian regimes complicit in forging the Axis Alliance in the years leading up to World War II.

Oldimprints.com is pleased to offer a catalogue of house plan booklets and brochures dating from the early 1900s through 1970. These “pattern books,” depicting a home’s exterior together with detailed floor plans and enticing descriptive paragraphs, feature page after page of designs for homes both large and small. The images and evocative language employed in the catalogues and brochures engaged the imaginations of readers of an earlier era as they pondered the virtues or liabilities of individual designs (see, for example, the prolix verbiage of item 47803, page 6). Insidiously, the dream of home ownership took hold....The house plans booklets and brochures offered in the present catalogue have been gathered over a period of years and provide insight into firms that “directed most of their business to those who would aspire to the American dream of achieving not only home ownership, but ownership of a house which was of a particular status-communicating type.” (Smeins, Building an American Identity, p.99).... The concept of 20th century “pattern book” ephemera as signifiers of evolving social and moral imperatives is one of the more intriguing derivatives of these engaging vintage brochures and booklets, and is surely an area of investigation warranting further study.

A large selection (over 650 items) of material from the beginnings of authors' careers. Unlike other "First Books" catalogs, this list is not limited to merely first books, but instead contains many stories, poems, essays, and other works published by authors BEFORE they published their first books. In addition, there are many signed and advance copies of authors' first books. All material is united by the perspective that when these items were published, their authors were not well established and the works in this catalog had to stand on their own merits rather than their authors' reputations.
