    The magazine “Petermanns Geographische Mittheilungen” (PGM for short) was founded in 1855 by August Heinrich Petermann, who was a brilliant cartographer. I appeared until 2004. Most of the important discoveries made in the 19th and early 20th century were published here first, always accompanied by maps drawn by Petermann and his staff. Often, these were the very first maps of the region ever to be made. Barth, Rohlfs, Overweg, Nachtigall, to name but a few, sent their notes to Gotha, the results of their expeditions were often already published while they were still travelling. From 1860 on, Petermann supplemented the “Mittheilungen” with the “Ergänzungshefte”, which contained longer research reports, and often several maps. In a few instances, the “Ergänzungsheft” was the only publication by that author, because he died before he could write his book. Carl Mauch was one of these unhappy explorers. From the beginning 12 monthly instalments of the PGM appeared. They were usually bound up at the end of the year, mostly in mauve boards supplied by Perthes, the publisher. For the collector, this means that he will have to buy the whole annual edition, even if he is only interested in a single article in one of the fascicles. I have now acquired a large collection of single fascicles, mostly in the original printed wrappers. I am offering them here under the name of the author whose article I thought was the most interesting, or was accompanied by the best map.

    Highlights include autograph letters from numerous polar explorers – Back, Parry, Sir John and Sir James Ross, Crozier, Hooker, Franklin, Markham, Nordenskjöld, Armitage, Borchgrevink, Gregory and Shackleton; as well as Francis Hare (re the destruction of the Kelly gang), JM Barrie, Helen Keller, JRR Tolkien and Evelyn Waugh.

    Photographs include vintage Frank Hurley Antarctic albums from the personal collection of Sir Douglas Mawson, Australian daguerreotypes, the highly important albums from the Elder Scientific Exploration Expedition 1891-92, and unpublished Spencer and Gillen photographs.

    Books include a fine first edition of AA Milne's Winnie-the-Pooh (1926) in the publisher's deluxe leather binding, atlases by Carroll (1876) and Goyder (1877-78), Powell's Narrative of a Journey to Swan River (1831, the first book on the new settlement in Western Australia), Byrne's The First Six Books by Euclid (1847, 'one of the oddest and most beautiful books of the whole century'), Walsh's Bradshaw Art of the Kimberley (2000, a modern classic), original colonial artwork by Benjamin Solly and Richard Hayley Lever, a portfolio by Leonard French (The Journey, 1970, ten original screenprints, only 25 sets), and John Brack Nudes. Fifteen Original Lithographs (1982, about 50 copies).
