  • White Gloves: Functional or Fashionable?

    White Gloves: Functional or Fashionable?

A few years ago, as Sotheby’s sold J. K. Rowling’s handmade book, "The Tales of Beedle the Bard", one of the auctioneers displayed the book for the gathered crowd while wearing white gloves. Gloved hands turn the mundane act of touching a book into a ritual - and a photo op for media coverage of bookish events. While wearing gloves may have been de rigueur for rare books at one time, more and more special-collections librarians now favor clean, bare hands over cotton gloves.

  • Excellent Sales at the 51st Stuttgart Antiquarian Book Fair

Excellent Sales at the 51st Stuttgart Antiquarian Book Fair

Beautiful, rare and unusual books are in steady demand in an economically unsteady world. After three busy days the Stuttgart Book Fair closed with excellent results. Almost all the 80 exhibitors from Europe and the USA reported five or even six-digit sales. At the opening on Friday, 27th January, the stands were crowded. The high quality of the items in the Book Fair Catalogue had attracted dealers and collectors from Europe and overseas as well as museums, libraries and archives. So it is not surprising that many catalogue highlights changed hands within the first few minutes. Among them were Napoleon’s personal copy of  “Ossian” (Fons Blavus 150,000 €) or De Bry’s “Collectiones Peregrinatium (Patzer & Trenkle 90,000 €). Heribert Tenschert, who exhibited a stunning collection of early manuscripts and books all written and printed on vellum, was very satisfied with the attention which this collection commanded from dealers and collectors.

  • How the trade in rare books has changed

How the trade in rare books has changed

“The business of dealing in books in not compatible with quick profits on turnover. The most successful dealers are not those who buy books which they know they can sell straight away, but those who hold stocks.” A universal truth when it comes to rare bookselling? What Lord Parmoor (Quaritch) wrote in the early 1950s was  a general rule at that time. Today, there seem to be as many views on  the worth of books and the future of the trade as there are booksellers. Has the market changed?

The Private Library has become an irreplaceable resource for all booklovers. Since April 2012, it is a static archive. L. D. Mitchell will no longer post new original content.
