The vogue for small format almanacs, often called Étrennes (New Year gifts), began rather innocently in France in the early eighteenth century, before exploding into a specialized printing and publishing industry that spread to neighboring countries and lasted well into the nineteenth century. Often produced by stationer-binders rather than traditional printer-publishers, these almanacs were usually printed in very small formats, 24mo or 32mo. The originally practical purpose of the almanac came to be eclipsed in favor of the frivolous pleasures of pretty bindings and light-hearted illustrations, although many almanacs in name only still included yearly calendars. Herewith a small selection.
