Pop Up At the Opera! Celebrate UNESCO World Book and Copyright Day With Enrico Caruso and the American Booksellers!

Pop Up At the Opera! Celebrate UNESCO World Book and Copyright Day With Enrico Caruso and the American Booksellers!

By Bailey Kung

Settled in 1651 by the Dutch, New Castle, Delaware is a charming waterfront town rich in history.  The town’s ownership changed hands several times during the colonial period: it was originally named Fort Casimir, called Fort Trinity by the Swedes, rechristened New Amstel by the Dutch, and finally named New Castle by the English. Today it is home to brick sidewalks, cobblestone streets, and hundreds of historic buildings from the seventeenth through nineteenth centuries. Among the landmarks are the Old Court House, built in 1732 and used as the first state house of Delaware, and the George Read House, a grand mansion and garden built in 1801 by the son of a signer of the Declaration of Independence.

Centrally located on the Mid-Atlantic coast between New York City and Washington, D.C., and about 40 miles from Philadelphia, New Castle is also home to ABAA dealer and publisher Oak Knoll Books and Press (oakknoll.com). Oak Knoll will host a Pop Up Book fair at their shop in the Opera House, a three-story building built by the Masons in 1879 with high ceilings and great views of the town and nearby Delaware River.  Enrico Caruso, Annie Oakley, and many other famous performers graced the Opera House’s stage, which remains intact and, from time to time, still provides a platform for singers who happen to stop by.

Oak Knoll is pleased to join UNESCO’s literacy campaign on World Book and Copyright Day. As specialists in the field of “books about books” (printing history, book production, and bibliography), Oak Knoll is particularly well-acquainted with the importance of books in our lives and throughout history. They will be joined by two more ABAA dealers and bookselling friends for the Pop Up Book fair. Ian Brabner Rare Americana (rareamericana.com) of Wilmington, Delaware, will display a selection of rare books, manuscripts, and ephemera from eighteenth- and nineteenth-century American history.  Between the Covers Rare Books (betweenthecovers.com) will travel from Gloucester City, New Jersey with a showing of modern literary first editions.
