In the second half of the 15th century, even after Gutenberg’s invention, some books were still printed from woodblock rather than moveable type. In these blockbooks text and images were combined closely, often on the same page. Most of them conveyed biblical knowledge, although more secular topics were occasionally included. For pupils and students, schoolbooks and Latin grammars were produced. Wider circles of readers were reached by travel guides for pilgrims and calendars.
The online displays fifteen blockbooks from the library’s collections. It can be viewed on the website of the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek, or in the printed catalogue which is available from the library. Click here.
