ILAB Library - All You Need To Know About Rare Books and the Antiquarian Book Trade

Robert Wright, President of ABAC on bookselling in Canada

...There will be a considerable amount of interesting Canadiana at the Toronto Antiquarian Book Fair.  Material offered for sale will include rare books, maps, photographs, prints and ephemera on subjects such as early exploration and the arctic. There will also be important literary works by major Canadian writers including Leonard Cohen, Margaret Atwood, Alice Munro and L.M. Montgomery. Canada has a rich private press tradition, and there will be a good selection of finely printed books represented at the fair. The fair will provide a tremendous selection of antiquarian books in a world class setting, and I encourage everyone to attend!

    Rare Books in Hungary

The antiquarian book trade in Hungary is emerging. The young generation opens up to the international market and shows more and more that Budapest – like Vienna – is a European city full of cultural highlights, covering not only the history of arts, but the history of printing from its invention in the 15th century up to 20th century Avantgarde books. An interview with Zoltán Földvári (Budapest) and Norbert Donhofer (Vienna) about rare books in Hungary and the future of the antiquarian book trade.

"By any standard one of the giants of the rare book trade" - A Wake For The Still Alive: Peter B. Howard, Part 2

As my career in journalism fizzled out, my interest in antiquarian books and the rare book business grew, and by 1979 I was actively seeking a job somewhere, anywhere, in any position, in the Bay Area book trade. I told every friendly bookseller of my desire, but no job offer was forthcoming. Then one evening in early December the phone rang at home. It was Peter. The conversation went something very close to this: P:  John, it’s Peter Howard. Are you still looking for a job in the rare book trade?

Collecting Rare Books, First Editions and Cartoons - Syd Hoff

th September is the birthday of cartoonist and children's book author Syd Hoff (1912), who is best remembered for his Danny and the Dinosaur (1958) and more than 60 books in the HarperCollins beginning reader "I Can Read" series. Hoff sold his first cartoon to The New Yorker at age 18. His work also appeared in Esquire, Look magazine and other publications. Under the pseudonym A. Redfield, Hoff produced a cartoon series The Ruling Clawss for the Communist newspaper The Daily Worker in the 1930s and 1940s. He also illustrated advertising for Eveready Batteries, Jell-O, Rambler and other brands. But it was the children's books that brought him the greatest recognition.

Collecting Rare Books and First Editions - Linguistic Adventures

Some years ago I bought a copy of “Bizarre Books, a compendium of classic oddities” (New York, 2007). Books like that are not only fun to read but also very useful as a reference work when hunting for ‘bizarre books’. Books with funny titles, obscure topics and unusual stories, especially the older ones, make me curious and greedy. Most of them are hard to find though. The first title I bought after reading ’Bizarre Books’ was a “Handbook on hanging” (London, 1928). Thanks to internet it came all the way from a little brick and mortar bookshop on Isle of Arran (of all places…) to my private library near Amsterdam. But the book that really caught my attention was “An Irishman's Difficulties with the Dutch Language” (Rotterdam, 1908) by ‘Cuey-na-Gael’.

International Cooperation - or the power of nearly 2000 booksellers

In the past ILAB had always seemed to me rather distant and not relevant to my business or life in the trade. I believe I was not alone in this opinion. Even worse I thought it was a dull body “banging” on about rules and regulations which the National Associations already did very well. I really didn’t see ILAB as serving any purpose for me as I wasn’t interested in exhibiting overseas. So yes, you guessed it; this is one of those how wrong could I be stories…
