What if They Were Right… Whoever They Were? (New York 2017) by Greg Gibson
Published since 15 March 2017
The life of a journeyman major league book dealer (any one who makes his or her living in the trade as a hunter-gatherer, anyone not named Bill, Jim, Pom, Ed, or Don, or anyone not from the other side of the Atlantic whose shoes are worth more than most of your books)… this journeyman life, I say, is a simple one. As Einstein is reputed to have formulated it, we do the same thing over and over again and expect different results.

"Of the debacle at the ILAB Congress in Madrid, where I denounced all Riojas as swill not suitable to even gargle with and to be accompanied only with cheap reprints of Lorca on a bad day, and of the subsequent riot outside the U.S. embassy and then nationwide strike, I shall say no more." Thousands of authors, artists, musicians, scientists were forced to leave Nazi Germany after 1933, among them hundreds of publishers, booksellers, literary agents, auctioneers, and rare book dealers. In England or Palestine, the Netherlands or Scandinavia, the United States or South America, they tried to find asylum and to build up a new existence. Some of them failed, others succeeded, established new companies, and played an important role in exile, in their new home countries, and in the international book trade. Although this was probably the most dramatic event in the history of the trade, there had been no attempt to research the fate of all those displaced publishers, booksellers and antiquarian book dealers, until Ernst Fischer's biographical handbook "Verleger, Buchhändler & Antiquare aus Deutschland und Österreich in der Emigration nach 1933" was published by the German Antiquarian Booksellers' Association (VDA) in January 2011.
The seizure of power by the Nazis in 1933 was a decisive event also in the world of book collecting and antiquarian bookselling. Hundreds of rare book dealers, booksellers, publishers and auctioneers – among them the most famous of the trade – were murdered by the Nazis. Those who survived were forced to close their companies or they were forced to hand their antiquarian bookshops, publishing houses and auction houses over to the Nazis. Only if they left behind their whole existence was it possible for them to leave Nazi Germany and to escape to other countries all over the world. Some emigrants were fortunate enough to build up a new business in their new home country; a few of them became very successful, whereas other antiquarian booksellers or publishers never found their feet again.
In a series of articles antiquarian booksellers and rare book collectors from all parts of the world write about bookselling and collecting in their country. Part 1, written by rare book expert Fabrizio Govi is dedicated to the history of the book in Italy.
