A Working Life: The Rare-Book Dealer - Ed Maggs

“For someone who loves old and rare books, buys and sells them, Ed Maggs hardly comes across as bookish, more of an energetic sporting type. But then, Maggs, 51, had ambitions of becoming a reggae superstar – not quite what his parents had in mind after an expensive private education at Westminster. Maggs played in a band called Talkover, worked as a DJ in various minor clubs and in department store stockrooms and other undemanding jobs, before fetching up like a prodigal son in the family business he initially wanted to avoid.”

  • Antiquarian Booksellers in Exile – Susan Bach (1909-1997)

Antiquarian Booksellers in Exile – Susan Bach (1909-1997)

The seizure of power by the Nazis in 1933 was a decisive event in the world of book collecting. Numerous dealers and collectors – among them the most famous of the trade – were murdered by the Nazis. Those who survived were forced to close their companies and to hand them over to the Nazis. Ernst Fischer’s biographical handbook "Verleger, Buchhändler & Antiquare aus Deutschland und Österreich in der Emigration nach 1933" reconstructs the biographies of all German and Austrian booksellers, publishers and auctioneers who emigrated from Germany after 1933. The International League of Antiquarian Booksellers is proud to publish some of the most impressive stories told in Ernst Fischer’s book on its website. This article in a series of 25 booksellers' biographies is dedicated to Susan Bach.

  • In the Press - Bulk of Sendak collection leaving Rosenbach

“Nearly half a century ago, the Rosenbach Museum and Library began building a relationship with the young author and illustrator Maurice Sendak, who very quickly started using the townhouse museum on Delancey Place as a repository for his original drawings, manuscripts, proofs, and rare editions. Through the years the numbers mounted, and today about 10,000 items of Sendakiana, from original artwork to finished editions, fill the Rosenbach - the museum's best calling card with generations that grew up with his books.
But now that card is being recalled.”
